This website is an online version of NOVASTARTALK, a modular workshop designed by Northern Virginia Community College to help teachers integrate technology tools and 21st century standards-based language pedagogy in less commonly-taught language (LCTL) classrooms. NOVASTARTALK is a project of the National Security Language Initiative's STARTALK program, a federally-supported initiative that promotes the teaching of critical languages in America's schools as well as the creation of learning materials, courses and workshops to support those languages.
Videos: NOVASTARTALK participants talk about how they've benefitted from the activities learned in the F2F workshop.
NOVASTARTALK Online is an online resource that supports a summer institute designed to help teachers use technology tools and 21st century language pedagogy in the official STARTALK languages. In the face-to-face program, Arabic and Chinese teachers in each language have created technology-enhanced activities to expand the curriculum presently in place in their schools. The STARTALK teachers typically work in teams during the workshops and continue to collaborate during the school year at conferences and through the use of wikis and blogs. The networking that has resulted from this program in the past three years has enriched instruction and created a bond between teachers in and out of our face-to-face STARTALK setting.
Apply the Standards for Foreign Language Learning while creating STARTALK language materials.
Apply the principles of brain-compatible learning and differentiated instruction in the activities that they produce.
Use technology tools that promote real communication and student engagement in language classes (i.e. QUIA, MERLOT, wikis, blogs, podcasts, social media, social bookmarking, screen capture, audio and video tools, cartoon-makers, word clouds and more)
